Collections Care and Security The Cranbrook Archives welcomes the use of its collections by any serious researcher or scholar, and any members of the Cranbrook community. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve the materials in our care and as such, the following safeguards must be adhered to:
1) All coats and outerwear must be left in the vestibule. 2) All briefcases, book or computer bags, books, newspapers and other personal beleongings must be left at the front desk. Purses and wallets may be taken in the reading room, though purses must be stored on the floor. 3) Cell phone use is PROHIBITED in the Reading Room; please turn your phones off or on vibrate. 4) Laptop computers, note pads, and pencils may be used in the Reading Room. In some cases, digital photography will be allowed. 5) Food and drink are not allowed in the Reading Room. There are several local eateries or lunch is allowed on our outdoor porch.
Requesting Materials Each researcher must sign the register book with your name, address and purpose of your visit in order to assist staff in defining your research topic. Researchers are required to follow common archival practice:
1) Please request materials in advance or by using the published finding aids. Due to staff shortages and materials stored off-site, we may not be able to fulfill your request otherwise. The Archivist will pull and reshelve all materials for you. 2) Take notes in PENCIL only, or use a laptop. Do not mark up any materials or write notes on top of original documents/photographs. 3) Please remove only one folder from a box at a time.
Duplication of Materials Photocopying is permitted on a limited basis. This is to ensure that the materials in our care do not receive excess exposure to light. Please see our Photocopying Policy. The Archives reserves the right to restrict duplication.
