Assistant Teacher, Early Childhood Center

Cranbrook is seeking an Assistant Teacher for its Early Childhood Center. Responsibilities include: Assisting implementation of the daily program under the direction of the classroom teachers. Assisting teachers in preparation of materials, supplies, and set-up of the      learning environment. Sharing responsibility for the ordered arrangement of the learning environment and general housekeeping responsibilities. Assisting with preparation and implementation of daily snacks. Supervising and eating lunch with the children daily. Sharing before-school care, arrival, dismissal and playground supervision. And more. Requirements: The person selected for this position must have professional training in the field of Early Childhood, Child Development, or related professional field, and/or have practical experience working with young children.  This person must have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, and be able to relate well to children and team members.  Responsibilities must be fulfilled in accordance with Brookside’s philosophy. College Counselor
Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School
One-Year Position

Cranbook Kingswood Upper School is offering a one-year college counseling opportunity for an individual seeking to work with one of the leading independent school college counseling teams.  Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School is considered one of the top day/boarding schools in the U.S., with a diverse student population hailing from 20 states and 24 countries.  Our school seeks to instill in students a strong sense of personal and social responsibility, the ability to think critically, and the confidence to communicate and contribute in an increasingly global community.

The successful candidate will assume an active role in college counseling as an Associate Dean of College Counseling in the Upper School.  The candidate must be able to thoughtfully and effectively support and work with students to develop an appropriate plan for the school-to-college transition; advocate effectively on behalf of Cranbrook students with colleges, scholarship foundations and others through the development of strong letters of recommendation, follow-up phone calls, and individual meetings; be comfortable meeting with students and their families, as well as with college representatives; be willing and eager to learn.  Duties will also include some academic advising and co-curricular responsibilities as needed.

A comfort level with doing presentations, strong computer skills, an ease with interpreting and manipulating database systems (e.g. Naviance), web pages and social media is preferred.  A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required, though a Master's degree in one of the counseling fields is highly desirable.  Two to three years of experience in college admissions and/or college counseling work is strongly preferred. Involvement in professional organizations and meetings is expected.

The position is being created to maintain a full staff of five college counselors.

Junior Kindergarten Teacher

Cranbrook is seeking a Junior Kindergarten Teacher for its Early Childhood Center. Responsibilities include: Planning, supervising and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum in accordance with the philosophy of Brookside School. Gearing the program, expectations, and responses, to the needs of individual children with concern for their interests, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, special talents, and individual style and pace of learning. Treating all children and their families with dignity and respect, maintaining positive discipline through the use of nonjudgmental language and tone of voice. Sharing responsibility for the ordered arrangement of the learning environment, arrival, dismissal, snack, lunch, and playground supervision. Assessing children, conducting parent/teacher conferences, preparing progress reports and providing parents with regular classroom updates. And more. Lead Upper School Counselor

Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School seeks a caring and experienced counselor who is committed to the personal wellbeing of our students.  The counselor will provide individual student support and counseling and be responsible for creating and implementing school programming that fosters the social-emotional learning, stress management and resiliency of students.  To promote a culture responsive to the needs of our students, programming will include administrative, faculty and staff education on relevant health topics.  As part of this position, the counselor will help create advisory programming, in conjunction with the Deans of Students and Head of Upper School, for use in our academic advisory system.  As Lead Counselor, this individual will be an active member on student support teams, work closely with other members of the counseling staff, and will facilitate communication between students, school and families.  This is a residential position.  The counselor will have dormitory and extra-curricular responsibilities.

Job Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in the field (i.e. counseling, psychology, social work) and a minimum of five years working in the field is required.  Experience in a school setting and working with adolescents is important.  Familiarity with independent, boarding schools and diverse student populations is preferable.
  • A knowledge of current law and best clinical practice is expected. 
  • The ability to manage challenging or crisis situations and be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, faculty and administrators is required. 
  • The ability to observe confidentiality is essential.

Middle School Latin Teacher (Full Time)

Latin teacher needed to join a faculty of innovative and dedicated teachers of middle school boys (grades 6-8). This faculty member will teach four sections of grade-specific Latin for the 2018-2019 school year.  Responsibilities also include advocating for students and nurturing their growth as a grade level advisor, assessing students’ progress, partnering with parents, participating in a grade level trip to build relationships and community and foster empathy and leadership.  Faculty members meet as grade level teams, participate in faculty meetings, and attend school assemblies.  There are opportunities to coach athletics or lead activities after school, which is preferred but not required.

Spanish Teacher
Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School

Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School is seeking a full-time Spanish teacher for the 2018/2019 school year to join a highly experienced, supportive and creative World Language Department.  The ability to teach across the Spanish curriculum is desirable.  Classes are taught almost exclusively in the target language, and lessons integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with culture as a backdrop. Vocabulary and grammar play a role in this holistic process, however communication is the main goal.

  • Duties include teaching, advising, and extracurricular responsibilities. 
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in the subject area is required, with a Master’s degree and two to three years of teaching experience desirable.
  • A willingness to work in a residential program is preferred.

Substitute teaching positions are available at Cranbrook's Lower School (Brookside). Brookside is a Pre-K through 5th grade school, which offers substiutes a variety of quality teaching experiences. Substitute teachers must have a Bachelor's degree and teaching experience, with Teacher Certification strongly preferred.
