Matching Gifts

Many companies offer some level of corporate match for their employees’ philanthropic interests. Contact your company’s personnel or human resources office to find out if your employer, or your spouse’s employer, has a matching gift program. In many cases, you will be able to double or triple the impact of your gift to Cranbrook.

Gifts of Stock

Cranbrook’s preferred method of receiving stock is for the donor or donor’s broker to use electronic transfer via DTC (Depository Trust Company). Cranbrook’s account is as follows:

Please provide the following information to Cranbrook’s Business Office (248.645.3733 or rstedman@cranbrook.edu) before instituting the transfer:

  • Donor’s name and contact information
  • Stock to be transferred, including symbol and/or CUSIP no. and the number of shares 
  • Date stock is to be transferred and transferring broker 
  • The specific purpose of the gift (e.g., annual fund, scholarship fund, or capital pledge) 

 The gift of securities will be valued on the date control of is relinquished in favor of Cranbrook, e.g., the date the securities arrive in Cranbrook’s account via DTC. The value is based on the average of the published high and low for that security in accordance with the IRS Tax Code, FASB, and CASE guidelines.

Gifts of Cryptocurrency

Gifts of cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, can be a tax-efficient way to support Cranbrook, providing the donor with benefits similar to gifts of stock. Although Cranbrook does not currently directly accept gifts of cryptocurrency, we encourage you to explore donating through one of the numerous third-party platforms created to facilitate gifts of cryptocurrency. In fact, many donor-advised fund sponsors, including Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, and Vanguard Charitable, accept contributions of cryptocurrency. Please check with your financial advisor to see whether this opportunity makes sense for you.

Wire Transfer

Cranbrook is able to receive wire transfers of cash donations. Please contact Cranbrook's Gift Processing Department at giftprocessing@cranbrook.edu or 248.645.3141 for our wire transfer instructions.

IRA Rollover Gifts

Direct gifts to Cranbrook from your IRA, known as IRA rollover gifts or qualified charitable distributions, can be an easy and convenient way to make a tax-free gift from a significant asset. For those 70½ and older, the amount transferred is excluded from gross income, and for those 72 and older, also counts towards their required minimum distribution, subject to certain adjustments.

Donor Advised Funds
